Frequently asked questions
What is a time and materials invoice?
A T&M invoice bills the actual hours worked at an agreed rate plus the actual cost of materials (sometimes with a markup). It contrasts with a fixed-price quote and is common when scope is hard to pin down.
Should I add a markup on materials?
Either approach works — at-cost looks the most transparent; a small markup compensates for procurement time. Be clear in your terms which you use.
Can I set a cap on a T&M job?
Yes — many T&M contracts include a "not-to-exceed" cap. Note the cap in your terms and let the client know when you are approaching it.
How is T&M different from fixed-price?
Fixed-price gives the client cost certainty and the risk falls on you; T&M passes the cost risk to the client but feels fairer when scope is unknown.
